Do you know your purpose? There are few things as powerful in business than knowing your business purpose - your WHY. If you’re not sure of what your purpose is - and what the value is of having a purpose - read this article and use our free worksheet!
What Do We Mean by Purpose?
To put it simply, your business purpose (your WHY) is the reason you do what you do and why it matters. It is the fundamental reason your company exists beyond making money.
Even if you don't run a traditional "mission-driven" company, your business has a reason for being. It defines the core problem you solve and the positive impact you aim to create for your clients, community, or industry.
Often business purpose is associated with environmental or social impact, but true purpose goes far deeper. It could include transforming your industry or sector by driving innovation, making an impact for your customers by delivering better value or even creating a great workplace for your employees.
Why Does It Matter?
If you know your purpose as a business, figuring out how to set goals and measuring success becomes simple, as your purpose helps you define success beyond revenue - and when you know what your definition of success looks like, you can start making decisions that will move your business into the right direction - a direction that is actually motivating and meaningful to you.
The Difference Between WHY, HOW, and WHAT:
Your WHY (Purpose): The core reason you exist and why it matters.
Your HOW (Strategy): The unique approach, methodology, or values you use to deliver value.
Your WHAT (Execution): The specific products, services, or solutions you sell day-to-day.
Why Revenue Isn't the Only Measure of Success
In business, there’s a tendency to follow a path of what you think you’re “supposed to do”. Often, this simply means growing your revenue. But the reality is, success looks different for everyone and while growth is an excellent driver for some, it may not be fulfilling for everyone.
So, if not growth, then what?
Success in business, just like success in life, all depends on what ultimately drives you: your purpose.
Using Purpose To Measure Success & Set Meaningful Business Goals
Once you know your purpose (your WHY), the next step is to consider what your company does to achieve its purpose (your what). From there, you can measure your success based on how much progress you’ve made towards achieving your purpose.
If this sounds a bit abstract, let’s use an example: at The Emms, our purpose is to help business owners and companies bring their vision to life. We do this by developing high-performing websites for our clients.
Using our definition, success means that with the help of our work, our clients make progress towards achieving their goals. So, we measure our own success by looking at each client’s specific marketing and business goals.
These goals could include a range of things:
Increasing headcount
Getting positive customer feedback
Winning a dream client
Meeting financial targets
Launching a new product
Winning an important award
Securing funding
Raising funds for an important cause
Solving a critical challenge
Being featured in the news or a publication
Having a positive impact on the world
Making people’s lives better
And more…
